What is interior design in architecture?

Interior

Interior design, within the context of architecture, refers to the art and science of enhancing the interior spaces of a built environment to create environments that are healthier, more functionally efficient, and aesthetically refined for their occupants. While architecture primarily focuses on the overall structure, form, and construction of buildings, interior design addresses the spatial experience within those structures, shaping how people interact with and experience interior environments.

Interior designers work with elements such as space planning, materials, lighting, furniture, colour, and finishes to develop interiors that support both functionality and visual harmony. In contemporary practice, the relationship between architecture and interior design is highly collaborative, with both disciplines working together to create cohesive and human-centred built environments. The B.Des in Interior Architectural Design at Pearl Academy equips students to apply design thinking within architectural contexts.

The programme enables learners to contextualise their design decisions according to client needs, project requirements, and spatial conditions, while developing professional competencies in areas such as sustainability, inclusivity, and socially responsible design. As the built environment becomes more complex and user-focused, architecture and interior design are increasingly integrated disciplines, working in tandem to shape spaces that are both structurally sound and experientially meaningful.
