Location
The town of Kotel is situated in a picturesque small valley in the Kotel Balkan (Eastern Stara Planina Mountain). It is 328 km east of Sofia, 49 km north-east of Sliven, 38 km and 62 km south of Omourtag and Turgovishte, respectively.
History
During the Revival Period Kotel was an important economic and cultural centre. The town was founded in the 14th century by inhabitants of a nearby fortresses, demolished by the Ottoman Turks. It was named after the largest spring in the vicinity. During the 17th and 18th centuries Kotel became a rich craft centre. It is the oldest of artistic fabrics in the country and abroad, having a unique weaving school.
Landmarks
The town of Kotel has been declared an architecture and historical reserve. There has been preserved about 110 houses from the Revival Period in the quarter of Galata that survived the fire in 1894, as well as in those at Durlyanka street.
